My Faith
Beliefs in Action
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, my faith has shaped who I am both professionally and personally. In my research, teaching, and daily interactions with others, I try to emulate the exemplary life of Jesus Christ as He “went about doing good” (Acts 10:38), ministering to those on the margins of society. My faith in Him has driven me to live a life of virtue, integrity, and humility, treating others with respect and compassion regardless of their background or beliefs. These values are put into practice as I seek to find answers to academic questions related to ethics and leadership and as I teach my students to work and live according to virtuous principles.
Outside of my professional life, my belief that the family unit is of God emphasizes that “Children are an heritage of the Lord” (Psalm 127:3) and are entitled to be reared by loving parents in a family “founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ” (The Family: A Proclamation to the World). I value my family relationships and prioritize my time with them, which has enriched my work as a researcher and educator.
In addition, my faith also emphasizes service. I've enjoyed voluntarily serving others in various capacities throughout my life including being a missionary in São Paulo, Brazil, a church choir director, a church organist and pianist, a Sunday School instructor, a clerk and secretary for local church congregations, and a children's music leader. These experiences have given me greater purpose and meaning in my life beyond my professional work.
